Entering the Ecological Age
• Humanity is shifting from the Industrial Age and modern techno industrial culture where growth has been prioritized regardless of environmental cost—into the Ecological Age.
• We are experiencing the terrible consequences of ignoring planetary limits, including species extinction, ecological collapse, climate change, and human health crises, in short, the polycrisis.
• Our legal and economic systems must evolve to reflect this new reality—modernity is incompatible with planetary limits.
The Need for a New Legal Framework
• Current legal systems prioritize profit over sustainability, isolating human activity from its ecological consequences.
• Modern society is in monumental ecological overshoot, and we are destroying the biophysical basis of our own existence. Overshoot is fatal, civil society is eroding, and geopolitical instability is apparent. Modern culture is unable to deal with overshoot or civilizational collapse.
• Law must support ecologically sustainable practices and recognize human and nonhuman beings as part of one interconnected community.
